Mogens dahl chamber choir. The Coral of Light. Opening Concert of the Copenhagen Light Festival 2025. Note: Ticket sales opens on Wednesday 11th of December, 12:00 (PM).
It has become a beautiful tradition for the Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir to open the Copenhagen Light Festival, this year with a concert aptly titled "The Coral of Light," dedicated to the theme of light
The title "The Coral of Light" appears in the collection Sonnets of Dark Love by Federico García Lorca, which serves as one of the inspirations for Sven-David Sandström's major work for trombone, solo voice, and choir, Sonnets of Darkness and Love. Excerpts from this work will be performed at the concert. Featuring Swedish jazz musician Nils Landgren on trombone, the piece blends jazz elements with classical Nordic vocal artistry in a powerful and innovative way
Jazz influences are also prominent in the music of versatile Swedish composer and pianist Nils Lindberg. Over his long career, Lindberg composed music in a variety of genres, including O Mistress Mine, a series of songs set to texts by Elizabethan poets. Several movements from this work-combining Swedish folk tones with jazz harmonies and written for choir, soloist, piano, and wind instruments-will be performed during the evening
These two contemporary Swedish works will be juxtaposed with J.S. Bach's great motet, Jesu, Meine Freude. Here, the light is omnipresent in the form of spiritual illumination. The work's 11 movements feature two textual layers-hymn texts and biblical passages from Paul's epistles-that offer complementary perspectives. They balance the life-giving force of the Holy Spirit with the personal experiences of loss and suffering, or, metaphorically, between light and darkness
Program:
Sven-David Sandström (1942-2019):
Sonnets Suite (from Sonnets of Darkness and Love) - for trombone, solo voice, and choir
Nils Lindberg (1933-2022):
O Mistress Mine - for choir, soloist, piano, and wind instrument
J.S. Bach (1685-1750):
Jesu, Meine Freude, BWV 227
Performers:
Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir
Trombone and vocal soloist: Nils Landgren
