Cuarteto Casals - Noche española (spansk aften)

Cuarteto Casals. Noche española (Spanish Evening). The Spanish string quartet Cuarteto Casals invites you to a "Spanish evening" featuring an exciting program of Spanish, Italian, and German string quartet music.

The prolific Italian composer Luigi Boccherini was an outstanding cellist, and in his nearly 100 quartets, the cello often plays a more prominent role than it typically does in Haydn's quartets. This is also evident in tonight's String Quartet Op. 32 No. 5.

The evening begins with Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga's String Quartet No. 3. Often referred to as the "Spanish Mozart," Arriaga was a musical prodigy who, like Mozart, tragically died young. Despite his short life, his body of work is remarkable and includes three string quartets written at the age of 16. Tonight, his third and final quartet will be performed.

Joaquín Turina's music often reflects impressionistic influences, owing to his friendship with Debussy and Ravel. These influences, combined with elements of Spanish folk music, can be heard in the almost programmatic piece "La oración del torero" ( "The Bullfighter's Prayer" ).

The evening concludes with Johannes Brahms' String Quartet No. 1 from 1877. Brahms struggled greatly with the string quartet form before he was satisfied with a work worthy of publication and performance. He reportedly measured himself against Mozart's six quartets dedicated to Haydn, while also feeling the daunting shadow of Beethoven's groundbreaking contributions to the genre. Only with his Op. 51 Nos. 1 and 2 did Brahms feel he had achieved success
