For this Vogue knight "taste the watermelon" edition, we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and celebrate, showcase & highlight Palestinian culture within ballroom. No Pride in genocide and no one is free, til we're all free. #FreePalestine
The mighty watermelon-whether held in hand, depicted in art, or posted online as an emoji-is a powerful symbol for Palestinians. Watermelons are linked with Palestinian activism because their colors - red, black, white and green - match the colors of the Palestinian flag. That symbol became widespread during the decades when Israel banned the waving of the Palestinian flag in Gaza and the West Bank. "There are stories of young men who defiantly walked the streets with slices of the fruit, risking arrest from Israeli soldiers," Jerusalem-born author Mahdi Sabbagh wrote. "When I see a watermelon, I think of the unbreakable spirit of our people."
For all the categories, bring it in a green, red, white and black look celebrating the Palestinian flag color and symboling the watermelon. Why the watermelon? In 1967, the Israeli government made public displays of the Palestinian flag a criminal offense in Gaza and the West Bank. To circumvent the ban, Palestinians began using the watermelon because, when cut open, the fruit bears the national colors of the Palestinian flag-red, black, white, and green.

What is Ballroom?
Ballroom was created by black and latin trans women back in Harlem, New York at the late 1960s, due to racism they faced within the white pageant scene. Ballroom is an underground subculture by and for the BIPOC LGBTQ+ community and it is a competition where participants walk different categories in beauty, sex, fashion and performance. If you are not from the community, please be mindful of the space you take. If you would like to participate in our classes/sessions, please learn and study ballroom history beforehand. If there are any questions, please contact us and we will help you. No sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, ableism, body shaming or any kind of discrimination.
