Live electronics meet string motifs as composer Anders Lauge Meldgaard and the string trio Halvcirkel open up long, droning passages and minimalist, hypnotic ostinatos on their new release, Spirit.
On Spirit, the rich textures of the strings and vibrant melodic figures weave in and out of Meldgaard's recognizable electronic universe, built from sounds and samples on modular synthesizers and the distinctive Japanese Ondomo. The result is a captivating, genre-defying composition, where the relationship between the acoustic and electronic elements is so natural and organic that it becomes difficult to distinguish them from one another.
Halvcirkel & Anders Lauge Meldgaard have been collaborating for 10 years - first in connection with Meldgaard's legendary project Frisk Frugt, and later in collaboration on the release Fragment 94, which came out through År & Dag in 2021.
Anders Lauge Meldgaard
Anders Lauge Meldgaard is a composer and musician who works across a broad range of musical expressions - from free improvisation to modern composition, sound installations, experimental songwriting, orchestral collages, tape mixes, and noisy works for electric guitar sextet. Meldgaard is perhaps best known for his former alias Frisk Frugt.
Meldgaard is a co-founder of the indispensable collectives Yoyooyoy and År & Dag and has previously been nominated for Steppeulven and the Nordic Music Prize for his releases with Frisk Frugt.
Halvcirkel
Halvcirkel is an experimental string ensemble that explores classical works, improvisation, and free interpretation in various constellations, taking chamber music to new heights. The quartet has interpreted works by, among others, Philip Glass and Dmitri Shostakovich, and is known for its organic and minimalist sound and intimate performance style, where the balance between strict structure and improvisation is explored.
