Sumba is Bali's poor neighboring island. A woman has created a hotel school that lifts the island out of sub-tourism with culture, nature and residents in mind. Each student lifts 10-15 people out of poverty! Hear the amazing story! Income uncut to school
IF THE TOURISTS JUST FOUND THE WAY TO THE LAND OF SUBTOURISM
Subtourism are hidden gems that deserve more visitors. Places where tourism, when handled with care and in collaboration with locals, creates big, positive changes
Now you have a unique opportunity to experience how a holiday trip can contribute on several levels, so that local lives grow and holiday memories stand out from the crowd.
On Sumba - a remote island in Indonesia - the Belgian woman Inge De Lathauwer has created a hotel school that gives the locals completely new opportunities. She has spent many years proving how sustainable tourism can change lives.
Now Inge comes to Denmark to share her fascinating story from an island that few can pinpoint on a world map, even though the island is capable of delivering chalk-white sandy beaches, sought-after surf waves and intoxicating waterfalls.
But tourism can also hurt local people. Carina Ren, tourism researcher at Aalborg University, who shows the way through the paradoxes of tourism, and explains how we can travel and have our holiday do good in the local community, knows this - if anyone. Buy tickets here https://billet.gentoftekino.dk/billetter/34036/60778?org=131
WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?
Inge has participated in TED Talks with her personal story and Carina has been dealing academically with tourism for years. We will create a conversation, and you are welcome to ask questions.
This evening we assure you that you will become wiser, perhaps more adventurous and probably also impressed by how little is really needed to create holiday memories for a lifetime.
Inge travels 15,000 km to be there, Carina takes a slightly shorter route from Aalborg University, while you can just show up at Gentofte Kino, where there are fewer seats than on a charter plane.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
Because subtourism is underexposed. Because new forms of travel must gain ground and do good in the local community. And because we want to raise money for another student's education at Sumba Hotel School. It requires DKK 35,000, or something close to an annual salary for an entire Sumbanese family. Buy a ticket and support a young person.
