Afternoon fiction with Ursula Scavenius

Reading and inspiration from Denmark's most exciting short story writer!URSULA SCAVENIUS is acclaimed as one of the most exciting short story writers in Denmark, and we are honored to welcome her to read from her collection The Dolls.

Scavenius' short stories transport readers with dark and gripping tales of misinformation, isolation, prejudice and the search for belonging in displaced families. "Here is a writer of extremely unusual imaginative powers," BBC Radio 4 writes, "I found myself completely entranced, [it's] one of the most extraordinary pieces of writing I've ever read." Join us for an engaging reading of The Dolls followed by an open discussion with Scavenius about her inspirations, writing process and more.
URSULA SCAVENIUS is a writer based in Copenhagen. She is a graduate of the Danish Academy of Creative Writing and holds a Master's in comparative literature and Italian from the University of Copenhagen. She debuted in 2015 with the short story collection Fjer (Feathers), which won the Bodil and Jørgen Munch-Christensen Prize and was nominated for the Montana Prize for Fiction. Her second book, Dukkerne, was published in January 2020. It was highlighted by the BBC 4 and shortlisted for the Edvard P. Prize that same year, as was Feathers in 2015. Ursula Scavenius was granted the three-years Scholarship from the Danish Art Foundation 2020-2023.
Location: Set in the picturesque old fishing village of Svaneke, Olivarius Bookstore was originally started in 1876 by a pioneering woman named Elna Olivarius. More than a bookstore today, Olivarius offers visitors wine, coffee and unique gifts in an intimate literary setting.
