The Children of Sheherazade - Storytelling and social-emotional development in children

Join the seminar and learn about the link between oral storytelling and the social and emotional development in children. The project "The Children of Sheherazade" presents the results of a 3 year study of the consequenses of using storytelling in schools.

"The Children of Sheherazade" is a research and evaluation study in primary schools. For three years the children in the study has worked on a weekly basis with oral storytelling. Eight classes in four countries have participated.

Year 1 they heard 25+ stories related to their geographical origin.
Year 2 they listened to 30 stories with subjects they as a class decided. From Magic over Sports to Space and Animals.
Year 3 they themselves created oral stories, which were written down and drawn to create a book.

In each country there was a class which took active part in the project, and a control class to measure the impact against.

The study includes both quantitative and qualitative research questions providing scientific information of how and if the subject "storytelling" in schools can improve the children's emotional and social competences, intercultural acceptance, imagination, an understanding of common values and emotional and social skills.

In this seminar we look into the results and perspectives of the study.
